Y. J. H. Taco Meat

"My husband brought home this recipe from Yarmouth Junior High School’s family studies cooking program when he taught it one year and it is DELICIOUS! I had to increase all the ingredients to feed a family or group. This is my kids' favourite meal."

  1. This is SOoooo good. I did make a substitution - instead of the water & bouillon cubes and tomato sauce I used a tin of Italian spiced tomatoes. Cut the recipe back to 10 oz of hamburger. It worked and was thoroughly enjoyed. Served in a soft whole wheat tortilla

  2. Great recipe for bulk taco filling for OAMC or just to feed a crowd. I thought this might be too mild for my tastes, so I added a healthy sprinkle of cayenne, and about 1/4 cup of medium heat taco sauce. Next time I would probably use an 8 oz. can of tomato sauce and 1/4 cup taco sauce instead of 1 1/4 cups tomato sauce.

  3. Since my favorite taco seasoning (Ortega) has gone up in price and is hard to find, I have been searching for a recipe and this is the one! I didn't have any bouillon, but used 4 TBS. of brown gravy mix and just a little less tomato sauce. Otherwise this was just a perfect combination of ingredients. Everyone should play Pick A Chef when it comes around 'cuz If it hadn't been for PAC, I probably wouldn't have found this. Thank you for sharing!

  4. Bobbiann, this was a quick and easy recipe when I was in a 'couldn't really be bothered cooking' mood... and I like that it used pantry cupboard ingredients. We liked it but I don't know if it will ever be in my top favourite Mince (=ground beef) recipes... this is rather a good standby for every now and again when you find yourself short on ingredients and motivation and definiately hungry for something more substantial, when staring at the remnants in the bottom of the fridge. This was super easy to make, is very economical so would suit those on a tight budget and tasty. I subbed the stock cubes with homemade veggie stock and upped the garlic and cumin as we like them a lot and this now one of my store cupboard standby recipes. Please see my rating system, a lovely 4 stars :) Thanks!
